I consider myself a successful woman in several aspects of my life. I’m a mother to 3 wonderful and well rounded children and a top exec at one of the biggest financial institutions in Nairobi having climbed the corporate ladder and secured a premium position in my industry. But success did come at a price. My marriage fell apart, and I had to raise my children, all by myself for the past 15 years.
One day, I went to a charity gig and met this guy Ben. He was so charming and had such a way with words that I couldn’t resist him. We swapped numbers, and before I knew it, we were an item. I was smitten by Ben’s energy and felt like I was young again.
Our relationship was kinda weird, but I couldn’t help myself. Ben was just so darn charismatic! He’d take me on exotic trips, wine and dine me, and get me to do things that were out of my comfort zone. It was like living a double life, and I loved it!

But, little did I know, Ben was a “Ben 10” – a Kenyan term for young dudes who date older women for their money. I had no clue, though. I thought our love was real. Ben was always eager to please me, and I thought he was my soulmate.
One day, Brian calls me up and says he’s invited his buddy Ben over for dinner. I was shook. I’d never met any of Brian’s friends before, but I just knew this was gonna be bad.
And boy, was I right. Ben walks in the door, and I’m like, “oh, snap!” Turns out, Ben was my son’s friend from uni. I was horrified! I couldn’t believe I’d been so clueless.
The dinner was so awkward. I couldn’t even look Ben in the eye, and Brian could tell something was up. After dinner, I pulled Brian to one side and spilled everything. He was surprised but really cool about it. He had no idea his friend was seeing his mum, and he said he’d talk to Ben.
The next day, Ben calls me up and apologizes. He said he had no idea I was Brian’s mum and that he really loved me. But, something had changed. I couldn’t carry on seeing him knowing that it was all based on a lie.
So, I ended things with Ben and focused on mending my relationship with my son. It was a tough lesson, but it made me realize that sometimes, the things we want can be our downfall. I had been blinded by my desire for love and forgotten to read the warning signs. I knew I had to be more careful in the future and not let my emotions get the better of me.
I learned to appreciate the simple things in life, like hanging out with family and friends and doing the things I love. I didn’t need a partner to make me happy – true happiness comes from within. I moved on from the experience with a renewed sense of purpose and a greater appreciation for the people in my life.
