The world of makeup can seem complicated, especially when presented with an overwhelming array of options promising transformative results. Learning how to do makeup is an art, and in the world of beauty, Makeup Artists (MUAs) are the architects of transformation, masters of brushes, and visionaries of artistry. Though they are experts in crafting stunning looks for their clients, have you ever wondered how they approach their own everyday makeup? Do they opt for elaborate looks, or do they prefer simplicity and natural elegance? We reached out to four Kenyan Makeup Artists, each with their distinct artistic flair, to share with us their favorite everyday makeup looks.
Winnie Wendy- @waofaces
Winnie is a hair and makeup artist specializing in bridal beauty and red-carpet glam. With close to 7 years in the industry, she niched into bridal beauty because it is a unique and transformative process that allows her to be a part of a bride’s most special day. “Bridal makeup is not just about applying cosmetic products; it is about crafting a dreamlike experience for the bride. I am very intentional with my selection of products, and colors that will enhance natural beauty as I strive to create a look that reflects the bride’s individuality and vision.”
Her favorite everyday go-to makeup look is the less-is-more makeup look and her must-have products are sunscreen and gloss. “I love La Roche Posay sunscreen and I often alternate between KIKO Milano and Lancôme glosses. My makeup look can be narrowed down to sunscreen, a tinted moisturizer, concealer (for concealing where necessary), lightweight setting powder, filled-in brows that still look natural, mascara, lip gloss, and voila!”
Kate Wambui – @kanai_beauties
With over 7 years of experience in the beauty industry. Kate’s artistry covers areas of fashion photoshoots, creative/editorial photoshoots, and everyday makeup looks. She is also a makeup trainer and product consultant. “I have learned from my clients one universal rule, women want to look fresh, flawless, and beautiful. It’s this principle that drives my signature style which is feminine and natural.”
The minimalist makeup look- known as the ‘no makeup look’ is Kate’s personal favorite. She loves how this type of makeup always looks fresh and flawless. “I’ve noticed as I’m getting older, I am loving luminous/dewy skin that makes my face look youthful. I generally shy away from thick makeup and prefer using natural-looking hues that compliment my skin tone.”
Lip gloss and Pressed powder are her holy grail products. “I carry my favorite pressed powder everywhere for touch-ups. As much as I love my dewy look, my face can get oily really fast, so a pressed powder helps to blot out some of the oils and maintain that fresh look.”
Sinitta Akello – @Sinittaakello
Known for her unconventional creativity, Sinitta started her makeup journey back in 2013 under Suzie Beauty and has managed to carve a niche for herself with her unique take on makeup as an art. She enjoys working mostly on photoshoots and delights in pushing a client’s concept from idea to reality. “What I love most about being a Makeup Artist is the creative process of how makeup translates on a photoshoot, particularly for creative makeup shoots where I get the chance to really play in my aesthetic. I enjoy the craft side of prep work too. Whether that’s painting feathers, flower arrangements or beading, basically getting to design what the look will eventually be like is fun for me.”
Her personal favorite makeup look is the complete opposite of her work, she loves a very natural makeup look. “I like a natural look because it’s simple and not too extra but don’t get me wrong when the occasion calls for it, I do love to go all out as well! I like shaped brows, glowing even skin with a little dimension so that my face doesn’t look ‘flat’, and most importantly mascara to just give my eyes a pop! lip gloss whether high or minimal pigment is also a must-have to finish my look.
Ruth Kinuthia – @Make_upbyruthie
Inspired by her love for fashion and the beauty industry, Ruth’s journey into Makeup Artistry first started in the modeling industry. “In 2008, I was crowned with the prestigious title of Miss Kenya, my time as a beauty queen helped me appreciate the beauty and cosmetic industry even more. From there, becoming a Makeup Artist was a natural transition for me as I have always had a passion for art.” Ruth has since managed to grow her brand and has even received recognition as one of the leading Makeup Artists in the country having been awarded the prestigious ‘Makeup Artist of the Year’ award at the Kenya Fashion Awards. Her portfolio ranges from weddings, professional photoshoots, and editorial/commercial work.
“My favorite everyday makeup look is the ‘No makeup’ or nude look as it is sometimes called. It is one of the best ways to accentuate your natural beauty. That and it works very well as an everyday look and transitions so easily from day to night with just a bit of effort. With the right techniques, you can make the most of your natural beauty without wearing a ton of makeup.”
Eyeliner, compact powder, and lip stain are the three products she swears by and highly recommends. “Eyeliner defines and accentuates the shape of your eyes. It can add a touch of glamour to an everyday makeup look while a face powder can give you that effortless look when applied correctly. Finally, a lip stain or any lip product of choice is the perfect way to complete any makeup look.
One thing these Artists have emphasized is the importance of taking a less-is-more approach to beauty. Makeup doesn’t have to be complicated, with the right tools and techniques you can highlight your favorite features while looking polished. Makeup is an art/tool that allows you to express yourself, so feel free to pick up a brush experiment, have fun, and let your unique beauty shine through.
